Hellfire Book Club

Postby CubedCodeMonkey » Tue Sep 23, 2014 7:27 pm

This has popped up in chat quite a few times recently, so let's get a thread going. If the admins decide its large enough and warranted enough, we can split this out into its own subforum, but for now, let's talk about books!

I'm currently working my way through the Wheel of Time fantasy series. I'm on book 9 out of 14, and I'm still absolutely loving it. It's a fairly dark, epic fantasy series told from the perspectives of many characters, and ultimately centers on the battle of good vs. evil.

What are you reading currently, and what do you enjoy reading?

EDIT: I'll go ahead and put this request in now. Admins, it would be great if we could get this as a whole sub-forum, that way we could post spoiler-related topics about books for people to discuss and not have to risk putting everything into one topic that all will read.

While I was taking time off, gdog sent me this book to read.

Jonathan Strange and Dr Norrell

Very book and the way the author wrote it made for a very enjoyable read.

repeat of what i just put in chatbox... but for others that aren't here just now...

I highly recommend the Patrick Rothfuss series:

book 1) The Name of the Wind
book 2) The Wise Man's Fear
book 3) <yet to be released>

it's a great series - one of my favourites ever and it's even being made into a tv series eventually...

Cheers!

I am currently reading an Urban Fantasy novel by author Benedict Jacka, called Hidden. This is book 5 of the Alex Verus series. The story is about a modern day Mage, who's specialty is seeing the future, who works in London at a magical book store in modern times. This book leans towards mystery and detective type novel.

Another couple from the Urban Fantasy realm would be:
1) Jim butcher's 'Dresden Files' this series got me hooked into the Urban Fantasy realm.
2) Kevin Hearne's 'The Iron Druid Chronicles" This one is awesome, about the last druid alive after the others will killed off by a vampire war and he lives in Arizona. Cool ideas about vampires, werewolves and other magical entities living in modern times.
3) David Sakmyster's 'The Morpheus Initiative" This guy does a lot of research before writing his books and I love how you feel it could actually be true. This is about a guy who is psychic and is recruited by the government to find things. The first involves the Pharos Lighthouse which a theory of history thinks is the resting place of the Great Library of Alexandria.

Well... very great idea ! My shelters are so heavy now...

I will not make the list of all books I've read, they are simply too many.

Series I really enjoyed and that I sometime read again :
  • The Chronicles of Amber of Roger Zelzany. Definitively my favorites!
  • The Sword of Truth of Terry Goodking. What to say more? it really compete for first rank with Amber.
  • The Chanur novels of C. J. Cherryh. Pretty old, but still amazing
  • The Gor novels of John Norman. in fact, the first one is the best of all.
  • etc... like "Dungeons & Dragons" novels, "Shadowrun" novels,...

And now I'm reading this (yeah... all at same time) :
- War of Mages, of Mercedes Lackey
- Black Magician, of Trudi Canavan
- Sisters of the Moon, of Galenorn Yasmine

so... fantasy and gothic time !
(and oh, I know... some are not "heavy male" books, but who cares ? )

By the way, I've got many ebooks (in french) for who is interested, for reading on device.

I've heard great things about the Sword of Truth series, so that's on my to-read list. I was torn for a bit between starting that and Wheel of Time, but I went for WoT. Time will tell if I'm disappointed with that choice or not!

Uh game of thrones? (Lol) Actually I want to bash that series a little bit if I may. Comparing GRR martin to JRR tolkien sounds like really reaching. I mean yeah, martin's creation has a ton of characters, and some of them actually backstoried to the point of having lives of their own. But you hear the comparison being thrown around a lot. Tolkien was cooking up LOTR for 3+ decades - even all other things set equal it'd be really surprising if Thrones could reach the complexity of middle earth lore, with the themes and... undercurrents and stuff. Hello btw! _O/

All that being said, I was swallowed up by Book I of song of ice and fire (GoT) more even than I was when I read lord of the rings. Only I found the quality flagging as I went through the succeeding books, like george was struggling to not get bored by all the brutal boorishness of the cultures he had invented. At one point he ditches the divvied up manner in which book 1 was written (chapters being from point of view of specific persons). I had actually been looking forward to reading arya's story, but skipping reek's ('sorry, brah').

I am really enjoying ASoIaF, as well. George just needs to stop eating the pages he's written and finish Winds of Winter!

And you can't compare the two at all. LotR is very much an epic fantasy tale, while ASoIaF is more like an epic sociopolitical bloodbath with elements of fantasy thrown in there!

I absolutely HAVE to recommend The Book Thief.

It's about a girl who learns to read and embrace the power of words in Nazi Germany, and the book follows her life and its various zeniths and nadirs (not gonna spoil it). It's currently my favorite book; it's just super deep, and is a really thought-provoking novel.
