eReaders

Postby CubedCodeMonkey » Wed Dec 03, 2014 1:00 am

So, my current eReader is an old Sony PRS-300, and it's been working for me for quite a while, but has recently started to crap out and I'm thinking of upgrading. I want to stick with an E-Ink screen and add in some front lighting, and while the Kindle and the Nook are still the top, I was also reading up on some seemingly promising devices from Kobo.

For those of you that have an eReader, what do you have and do you recommend it? For those of you with Kindles, have you done any converting of ePub files, are you worried about the heavy DRM-reliance of the Kindle? Have you made use of the Kindle Owners Lending Library at all?

For those of you with Nooks, Kobos, or any others, what has your experience with them been, and do you notice any lack in the features that the Kindle provides?

For anyone with an eReader, how often do you load books in via your computer and not through the respective store? I have a decent library of primarily ePubs that I still need to read, and I'd want to bring them over (either converted to another format or not).

Thanks in advance!

Ccm

I have an old kindle DX. It works great.

I recommend the cover with auto light that extends up from corner.

hey CCM,

I have an old kindle I still use, but not often now that I have a tablet (nvidia Shield). I currently use the amazon app to read my kindle books on my tablet. I still keep the kindle for reading outside because it is the best for that compared to the backlite versions I have seen and my tablet.

Have either of you noticed any issues with converting non-DRM books to a Kindle-approved format, or have you even tried? I'm a big fan of EPub and more open formats, but I know I'd have to convert those to get them into a Kindle.

hey ccm...

i have a kobo arc7 hd...

I haven't yet imported any non-kobo ebooks into it but it apparently supports epub and other formats and is supposed to just import them seamlessly.

I have purchased many books through the kobo store and have had no issues - i also subscribe to magzines through kobo.

One nice feature is that it is also a full android tablet so i also play elemental kingdoms on it!

i've been using it for about 10 months now and love it.

if you have any specific questions about it, or want me to try anything, let me know.

Cheers!

My wife handed me down her old Nook HD when she got an Ipad Mini...it seems to be very outdated now as it's processor seems slow..but it does act as a full tablet in addition to being a book reader. The Ipad also can be used as a book reader..just had to download the app and she was able to view all of the purchases she had made on the Nook.

I have the apps for all the ereaders.

I started with nook but use the app on my devices.

With Kindle, I switch between my account and my sisters are our reading taste are pretty equal.

And she reads alot.

Currently reading two books
I tend to veer away from actual sadly but the lighting in this apt sucks and holding open a thick book for to long is hard on the hands. I can just prop my tablet and set the font at a easy to read size and adjust brightness.

one on my kindle account a book gifted to me by gdog (I miss him) called Jonthan Strange and Dr Norwell.*or visa versa) About Magic in Old World England and would recommend it to anyone.

On my sisters Kindle Im reading the newest in the Cousins series by Phillippa Gregory ( if you wated White Queen on Starz its was directly based on a series of her books and covers the time period of whats better known as The War of the Roses between the Yorks and the Lancasters In England.

Brititsh royal history is at the top of my list when reading.

I personally think I was born in the wrong country
