Creature art comments and observations

Postby Tirrik » Thu Jan 10, 2013 9:55 pm

Thought I'd make a topic for random discussions and observations of creature art.

Anyone else unsatisfied with the final evolution stage of the Corrupt Dragon? (pics here)

My reaction to the art
Stage 1: Cool dragon
Stage 2: Getting spiky and scary!
Stage 3: Awesome! Wouldn't want to mess with this intimidating earth beast!
Stage 4: Fluffy/fuzzy, vomiting, immobile... :?:

Also, if you look carefully at the fully-evolved Hill Giant, you'll see a cow being tossed through the air . The artist has said he put that in as an Easter Egg.

Agreed with corrupt dragon final stage... didn't work out, looks fake! But majority of the time (for me), stage 4 of a creature changes so drastically, it actually turns out better.

Another final stage I was disappointed with was Djinn of Ire... Card looked AWESOME at stage 1, simple and freaky, I was excited to see its final stage.

For me I have been disappointed about 50% of the time, I dont understand why the art changes so drastically once you hit stage 4.... for me it ends up drastically awesome or drastically stupid

Just a few examples:

Like:
Swirling Serpent
Norman
Arachne
Lich King
Lamia
Centaur Huntress
...and of course Mrs. Claus hahaha

Dislike:
Azure Dragon
Chimera
Elven Heritic
Djinn of Ire, Vapor, and Flame
Rousalka
Tiera the Eternal
....just too "cartoony"

All the archers too

Yeah, I think the 4th stage should just be another change added to the previous one, albeit maybe a slightly more dramatic one. But indeed, some of the stage 4's just look too different, like they started a new creature from scratch and made it look vaguely like the original one. Some monsters are not like that though.
And yeah lol at Mrs Claus... "evolution" = remove a portion of clothing.

I actually like the 4th stage Djinn of Ire though. I thought it was cool/fitting. I can see how some are a bit cartoony though (wasn't a fan of final stage Chimera either). Maybe depends on the artist. Not sure how many different artists contribute to Hellfire...

Ok, I gotta say.... I can't look at the stage 4 wild caribou without cracking up. I just can't take it seriously

mmm... It has earings on its antlers... :o

The card from the beggining looked rushed and basic. Like the shadows of men fighting though

Man still for the most part, I prefer the 2nd or 3rd stage artwork for most cards

3rd Stage tends to be my most favourite.. but there are a few stage 4's that I reckon look much nicer then the previous stages.
And I agree with you Tirrik, 3rd stage Chimera was much nicer than the 4th stage.

I was probably most surprised by the Djinn of Vapor stages 3 and 4. I would have preferred stage 4 to continue the idea of the water itself coming to life rather than some toothy whale thing hiding in there all along.

Agreed^ The guy had a six pack at stage 3, then turned into a fossil at stage 4

I think I was most shocked by Lucifer.... I get that he is supposed to be a Demon and monstrous.... but I had no idea S3 &4 were related to S1 &2. I love the Artwork in the first two.... but i never pictured satan to be an ogre xD
